MILINA
ELENI'S HOUSE Accomodation for 2 - 4 persons
It is hard to imagine that any house could be nearer to the sea
than this one; not more than 5 yards from the door to the water's edge, while
inland, the olive groves climb the hillsides towards the mountains of Tisseon
Oros. According to the inscribed marble slab over the door. Eleni's House was
built in 1922, a khalivi used only during the olive-picking time, as a place
to stay and to store the picked olives before taking them to the press. In
those days (and indeed, until recently), the only practical way to carry
olives back to Milina was by boat, and so it made sense to build the house as
close to the sea as possible.
Then, with the opening of the road from Milina to Trikeri, the owners were
able to convert the original stone building into an enchanting house. This now
consists of a double bedroom, and a bed-sitting room, with one single bed and
a couch that doubles as a second single. Both rooms have built-in cupboards.
Outside, across the small patio, via several sets of steps, a completely new kitchen has been built, and
leading from this is a new, fully-fitted bathroom/WC with shower.
Note that the water is solar heated, but that there is no electric back-up.
The kitchen is equipped with gas rings, fridge, cupboard space and working surfaces. A
large window overlooks the sea.

From the patio itself, two or three steps lead down to the water. The coast
here is not sandy, but there is a tiny beach, just big enough to stretch out
on. From here, the view is superb. Straight ahead, across the bay, the olives
come down to the waters' edge; above and beyond the hills rise in folds to the
horizon, crowned in the distance by the village of Lafkos. Slightly to the
left, the open waterway leads the eye back towards Milina, while further to
the left is the long, protective island of Alatas, with its old monastery
buildings almost hidden by the cypress trees.

As the House is 5km from Milina, it is essential to have your own transport;
either a car, or a boat. Please note that the House has at last been connected
to the mains electricity, and so gas and parraffin lighting is a thing of the
past. (Of course, if you really liked it that way, the lamps are still at the
House!)
